Homemade Ketchup – Just like Heinz but betterer
UPDATE: I just updated this recipe and changed out water for Tomato Sauce and put in new pictures since I found a new HUGE bottle of ketchup from Costco to showcase. This version is hands down, better than Heinz. Just sayin! 3/12/2016
I make my own Ketchup that tastes as close to Heinz Ketchup as I think you can get. When I first started making homemade ketchup I thought nothing would ever be better than Heinz but after trying it again after a year of using my own – I like mine better. For real.
While making it, my house smells like Apple Cider Vinegar and cloves but the taste is fantastic. The entire family approves and we are all Heinz lovers. No other brand has ever stood up to it as far as flavor and tangy-ness – until now! This recipe can be tweaked to make it Vegan, Sugar Free & Candida and I only use Organic and GMO Free products for this recipe.
I usually keep my ketchup in a large Heinz bottle but Shawn threw it away recently so I had to use this jar when I took pictures. I bought a new bottle and Shawn will not make make the same mistake of tossing it this time.
- 1 – 15oz Can of Tomato Sauce
- 2 – 6oz Cans of Tomato Paste
- 1 Cup Honey (Sugar Free Version is Xylitol)
- 3/4 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 2 TBL Maple Syrup Sugar (Exclude for Sugar Free version)
- 3 Tsp Real Sea Salt
- ½ Tsp Onion Powder
- ½ Tsp Garlic Powder
- 3/4 – 1 Tsp Ground Cloves
- ¼ Tsp Allspice
- ¼ Tsp Cayenne Pepper
- ¼ Tsp Ground Mustard
- ¼ Tsp Pepper
- 1 TBL Wright’s Liquid Smoke (optional but…it adds a GREAT flavor and smell!)
Pour all ingredients into a medium sized saucepan and stir with a whisk on High Heat until bubbling. Turn down to simmer for 15-20 Minutes and whisk regularly. Cool on stove covered and then transfer to a bottle or container of your choice. I cleaned out a Costco Sized Heinz Ketchup Container and this amount filled it up 3/4 full. *Warning…your house is going to reek like ACV all day!
